As an important event of the Fifth Shanghai Wild Ginseng Cultural Festival, the first wild ginseng auction successfully ended on November 30th in the auction house of Shanghai International Commodity Auction Company, which was hosted by SICA and sponsored by Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Trade Association, Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Society and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Famous Chinese traditional medicine enterprises in Shanghai contributed 20 high-quality wild ginseng to the auction, which sold 16 lots successfully, with a sale rate of 80% and a total transaction of 4.454 million yuan.

The “King of Ginseng” in this auction, was the 19th lot, weighing 21.58g with an initial price of 880000 yuan. After 7 times of bidding, the final price reached 1 million yuan, which set the highest transaction price of a single lot in the auction.
Another wild ginseng star, the 9th lot weighing 23g, started from 460000 yuan and closed the deal with 650000 yuan after 6 times of bidding. The 15th lot, weighing 7.4g, had a starting price of 300000 yuan and a final price of 320000 yuan, which marked the highest unit price of more than 43000 yuan. There were five lots that was bid more than ten times, adding enthusiasm to the atmosphere.

Aiming at the current situation that the wild ginseng market is frequently in disorder, making it hard to find a good ginseng, the auction assures the high quality of its lots. The 20 lots were carefully chosen from more than 200 wild ginseng that were sent to the auction. Each lot was strictly examined by the first seven certified wild ginseng appraisers in Shanghai, led by Mr. CHEN Junli, executive director of the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Tsinghua University and a famous wild ginseng identification expert. The certificates signed by appraisers and issued jointly by Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Trade Association and SICA also proved the identity for each wild ginseng.

Ginseng is a well known tonic, while wild ginseng is the top quality type of ginseng. Only those that lived more than 15 years in nature without any interference of human can be called wild ginseng. As introduced by Mr. YANG Hong, director of Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Trade Association, Shanghai is one of the main consumer market of the wild ginseng in China, with a high demand. In recent years, with an enhancement of health care consciousness, valuable nutritious herbs such as wild ginseng, cordyceps sinensis, and high-quality Fengdou, have gradually become the important choices for people’s health preservation. However, pure wild ginseng is becoming more and more scarce because of excavation. In recent years, the wild ginseng market is facing frequent disorder, chaotic price, and uneven quality, which kept the consumers away. At the same time, there exist many misunderstandings in the process of consuming the wild ginseng. The consumers often think that wild ginseng is just used for saving lives, or it will make people get inflamed. They also don’t know much about the nutritious function and consuming method of wild ginseng. This event aims at promoting related knowledge about wild ginseng consumption, displaying the high-quality wild ginsengs to people through the auction, using the branding effect to clarify the market and assure the quality for the mass public.
